"HP / LP ports" is the number of high-pressure and low-pressure ports on the first stage, which caps how many accessories (transmitter, SPG, inflator, second second-stage) you can run at once.

Pros
  • Simple, low-maintenance flow-by piston design that still delivers air even if the mechanism fails
  • Nitrox-ready to 40% with no special prep or cleaning needed
  • One of the more affordable complete sets on the market, with a lifetime warranty and service plan from Oceanic
Cons
  • Unbalanced piston first stage means breathing effort increases as tank pressure drops
  • Second stage has only a pre-dive/dive venturi lever, not a true diver-adjustable breathing-resistance knob
  • Not environmentally sealed, so it's better suited to warm, clean water than cold or silty conditions
Diver community sentiment
Mostly positive

Across two Scubaboard threads, divers generally describe the Alpha 8 (with SP-5 first stage) as breathing "dry" and impressively well for its low price point, with several owners saying it compares favorably to pricier regulators and calling the unbalanced piston SP-5 "trouble-free." Cold-water suitability was debated: one poster warned it may not be ideal for cold water, while another cited a fellow diver who used a related variant successfully on an ice dive. A couple of caveats surfaced: one user experienced water intrusion when inverted, attributed by an instructor to the piston design needing a vacuum test, and another went through a second unit due to piston O-ring wear over time.

This entry previously and incorrectly described a product called “Oceanic Alpha 9 SP5” (that name doesn’t exist in Oceanic’s lineup). The real, current product pairing the SP-5 first stage is the Alpha 8 Sport, and this listing has been corrected to describe it. It’s Oceanic’s budget-tier set, also sold with the pricier, environmentally sealed CDX diaphragm first stage as the Alpha 10 + CDX for divers who need cold-water protection.
